Four Students Receive RHOP and KHOP Scholarships

Grand Island Central Catholic High School congratulates four seniors from its class of 2018 who were selected as RHOP and KHOP recipients for their college educations. The four Crusader students who received these 2018 scholarships are:

  • TJ Haith, who will pursue dentistry at the University of Nebraska at Kearney in the KHOP program
  • Tommy McFarland, who will pursue pre-med at the University of Nebraska at Kearney in the KHOP program
  • Brynn Sealock, who will pursue pre-med at Wayne State College in the RHOP program
  • Shayla Steenson, who will pursue nursing at the University of Nebraska at Kearney in the KHOP program

“This is a very high honor,” Principal Kristen Klein said. “We are very proud to recognize not one, but four GICC seniors!”

RHOP is the Rural Health Opportunities Program, a cooperative program between Nebraska’s state colleges and the University of Nebraska Medical Center (UNMC). KHOP is the Kearney Health Opportunities Program at the University of Nebraska at Kearney, and is also a cooperative program with UNMC.

RHOP and KHOP scholarships are designed to address the special needs of rural Nebraska by encouraging rural residents to pursue a career in the healthcare fields and be committed to returning to rural Nebraska to practice healthcare. Students selected are guaranteed admission to medical school at UNMC. In addition to the secured medial school seat, these students receive full tuition to the college represented, and must maintain high academic criteria throughout their college experience. RHOP scholars attend Chadron State College, Peru State College, and Wayne State College. KHOP scholars attend the University of Nebraska at Kearney.
